Story of Khatu Shyam Mandir

Barbarik was the grandson of Bheem. He was so powerful that he could end the war of Mahabharat in one minute if he alone was to fight it. He acquired knowledge of warfare from his mother. Lord Shiva gave him three powerful arrows after being impressed with his tapasya. After hearing of Barbarik's powers, Lord Krishna went on to meet him and requested him for the demonstration of his arrows. Krishna asked him to make a hole in each leaf of the tree.
Without Barbarik’s knowledge, Krishna took one leaf from the tree and placed it under his foot. Barbarik released the first arrow, the arrow making holes in all the leaves, and started revolving around Lord Krishna's feet. Krishna asks Barbarik why the arrow is doing that. Barbarik replied that there must be a leaf under your feet, please lift your leg. As soon as Krishna lifts his leg, the arrow goes ahead and makes a hole in the remaining leaf. Lord Krishna was impressed by the phenomenal power of Barbarik. Krishna asks Barbarik, Which side are you planning to fight for, in the war of Mahabharat? Barbarik said I made a promise to my mother that I would fight for the weaker side. Since the Kaurava Army was bigger than that of Pandavas, I would fight for Pandavas. On this Krishna reply, since you are the greatest warrior on the battlefield, whichever side you join would make the other side weaker. So you are eventually rotating between the two sides, and in the end, you destroy everyone. Krishna offers a solution to avoid this situation. Krishna asks him for his head in charity.
So before the beginning of the Mahabharata War, Barbarik sacrificed his life to ensure the victory of his grandfather, the Pandavas. In return for his give-up, Barbarik was deified by a boon given by Krishna. Today, Barbarik is worshiped as Khatu Shyam Ji in Rajasthan.
